Any Bunny Feeling Crafty? (Easter Bunny Craft)

It wasn’t that long ago I told my hubby that I was feeling a bit crafty. He just hates when I say that. He knows that means I’m dragging him down to the craft store so I can look around and spend money. He always jokes I can’t go alone because someone has to “monitor my spending.” That’s when I thought of this idea:  the Easter bunny craft.

I have always been the type of person that when I see something, I immediately get multiple ideas in my head of how it can be tweaked into something else. If you remember, I created a Sock Snowmen craft one Christmas/winter season as a cute craft, and seeing something similar to that gave me the idea for this cute little bunny craft!

Any Bunny Feeling Crafty?

Let’s get started on how to make this adorable little Easter bunny craft. (If you don’t celebrate Easter in your school, that’s okay. You can totally just create it for “spring,” right?)

Gathering Materials

To get started, you will need the following materials:

  • Socks – I recommend pastel colors, but any color is fine. Remember, you can find some at the dollar store. You need one sock per person, and the length of the sock is just the height of the bunny really.
  • Rice – This is the filler part, but you can use other filler, such as the polyester filler they sell in craft stores or whatever you choose. You could even use scrap paper if you’re going for a rough type of bunny.
  • Eyeballs – the craft eyes. The size is completely up to you.
  • Scissors – to cut the sock (the ears)
  • Rubber bands – to create the neck and again for the ear pinning
  • Glue gun – I use this for speed and insurance that it stays in place. You, of course, can use other glue-like materials. As long as you (or a parent volunteer) are in charge of this piece, it should be fine.
  • Other fun stuff – This can be unique to each person’s bunny craft, so read on.

Creating the Bunny Craft

Step 1 – Gather all the materials needed.

Step 2 – Open your sock and pour in the rice. Then, place a rubber band around the rice to create a “neck” area. See the (dark, shadowy) image below.

Step 3 – Next, you will need to cut the ears. You will do this by starting at the top of the sock and cutting down the middle to where you would like your head to be. Here you will add another rubber band around the top of the bunny to create a head, BUT you will need to fold the “ears” back into it first.

What I did was first, I used a spot of hot glue to glue the sock closed for each ear so I wasn’t dealing with two pieces on each ear. Then, I wrapped the rubber band around the sock a few times, creating the head. After I did this, I then wrapped the last time inserting the ear piece. When it is wrapped and the ears are folded back, it looks like this image below.

Of course, you don’t have to fold the ears. You can cut them to the right dimension if you prefer. I folded them because I found that when I cut them, my sock curled up and got all wonky. Yes, wonky. That’s the only way I can describe it. And, when I fold it, it is sturdy enough to “stand up.” But, if you find a nicer way, please share. I love to learn. 🙂

Step 4 – Now we are going to add all the little trinkets that make this bunny craft actually look like a cute, adorable, little bunny! I added a ribbon around the bunny’s neck to cover the rubber band. I would probably go for something a bit more “attention-getting” than white, but when I went to pull all my ribbon, I discovered my children had a ribbon party or something with it.

I used a small piece of cloth that I shaped into a “belly” for my bunny and glued it to her belly. Besides cloth, you could use felt (which is very inexpensive, and you could easily divide it up for students; one piece for every four students or more). Or, it looks just fine without anything in the belly region. You could also leave it with solid colors, such as white.

I hot glued on eyes and a flower to cover the rubber band at the top where my ears come together. You could alternatively use buttons, pom-poms, or any other trinkets. Again, these can be items you find at the dollar store. I took a small piece of white felt (but any material will do – even paper) and cut out a small rectangle to create teeth. I added a line down the middle to show two teeth. I also glued a spot of a pom-pom (cut up a little) to make the nose. (However, the nose can be made of any material also. I’m thinking next time I might actually use a small piece of dark pink felt and cut it into a small heart shape for the nose!)  Finally, I glued a large white pom-pom on his back (or bottom) to represent his tail. See the image below.

So, when all is done, I had created an adorable Easter Bunny craft that is appealing and sure to grab attention. It’s perfect for a centerpiece for the holidays or just a fun activity to do before spring break when the students are getting a bit antsy! Either way, it’s sure to be engaging.
